Before you can evaluate what your courts need, it helps to understand what’s been working against them since October.

Freeze-Thaw Cycles

Wisconsin’s winter is defined by repeated cycles of freezing and thawing, and those cycles are the primary enemy of painted court surfaces. Water infiltrates micro-cracks in the surface, freezes and expands, then contracts as it thaws. Courts where ice melt is applied regularly will show paint degradation faster than courts where it’s avoided or used sparingly.

UV Exposure and Oxidation

Even during winter, UV exposure contributes to color fading and paint oxidation. Courts that were already showing fading heading into fall will emerge from winter noticeably worse, with markings that may still be technically present but no longer clearly visible under playing conditions.

What to Look for During Your Spring Walkaround

A spring court evaluation doesn’t require specialized equipment. It requires a systematic eye and the right things to look for.

Paint Fading and Color Loss

Walk the full perimeter and interior of each court. Are the boundary lines, key areas, and center markings clearly visible from a standing position? From a distance of 20 feet? Faded markings that seem adequate up close may be difficult to read during active play, particularly in low-light conditions.

Peeling and Flaking Paint

Check the edges of all painted lines for peeling or flaking. Peeling paint is a sign of adhesion failure, which means re-striping over the existing surface without addressing the underlying issue will produce the same result within one to two seasons. If peeling is localized, spot surface repair before re-striping may be all that’s needed. If it’s widespread, a more comprehensive approach is warranted.

Surface Cracking and Heaving

Inspect the playing surface itself, not just the markings. Cracks wider than a credit card thickness are a safety concern and will affect how long new striping adheres. Heaving or raised sections from frost damage may require resurfacing before re-striping makes sense. Note the location, length, and width of any cracks you find.

Debris and Staining

Look for oil stains, rust transfer from court equipment, and embedded debris that will affect paint adhesion if not addressed before striping. These are easy to miss on a quick walkthrough but significant for the quality and longevity of new markings.

Touch-Up, Re-Stripe, or Resurface? A Decision Framework

Not every court needs the same intervention. Here’s how to think through the right scope.

Touch-Up Striping

If the underlying surface is in good condition and markings are faded but not peeling, a touch-up application of the affected lines may be sufficient. This is the most cost-effective option and appropriate for courts that were re-striped within the last two to three years and have minor winter wear.

Full Re-Striping

If fading is widespread, if lines are partially peeled, or if the court is more than three to five years past its last striping, a full re-stripe is typically the right investment. Full re-striping ensures consistent color, line width, and marking placement across the entire court and provides a clean baseline for tracking future maintenance needs.

Surface Repair Before Re-Striping

If cracking, heaving, or widespread peeling indicates surface deterioration beneath the paint layer, striping over a compromised surface is a short-term fix that will need to be repeated sooner than it should. Addressing surface issues first costs more upfront but produces results that last. A qualified contractor can assess whether crack filling, patching, or full resurfacing is the appropriate first step.
